How shame acts as a barrier to seeking help for alcohol dependency
Secret drinking is a major problem in the world today. The hypocrisy surrounding what constitutes a “drinking problem”, together with unhelpful labels such as “addict” and “alcoholic”, lead many people to struggle in silence for years with an alcohol dependency. In this talk, I outline the reasons behind the shame people experience in connection with their secret binge drinking. I also reveal the positive approach to sobriety that allowed me to release my own shame (shame that had kept me drinking for more than two decades), and ultimately become empowered by my choice to ditch alcohol for good.
You will discover:
● Why many people find it so hard to ask for help to stop drinking alcohol
● Why Alcoholics Anonymous is not always a good fit
● How mindset is everything when it comes to achieving long-lasting sobriety
● How society perpetuates a “them and us” attitude towards alcohol use
● Why sobriety is something people are often made to feel ashamed of, while beating other addictions is applauded
How the ladette culture of the 1990s created a generation of problem drinkers
The Ladette Culture of the 1990s featured a plethora of famous female boozers, including media presenters Zoe Ball and Sara Cox, and normalized binge drinking for women in the western world. In this talk, I describe how I was drawn into a hedonistic lifestyle that seemed innocuous and completely acceptable due to it being reflected back to me everywhere I turned. From Sex and the City to the Spice Girls, this era demonstrated to women that being bolshie and boozy was not just okay but thoroughly modern and desirable.
You will discover:
● How alcohol and feminism became inextricably linked during the 1990s
● How the media portrayed women during the Ladette era, framing them as promiscuous, unfeminine and irresponsible
● What the lasting effects of the Ladette Culture were on the women who reached adulthood in the 1990s
● How the alcohol industry leapfrogged onto the Ladette Culture to maximize profits
